Nymphoplasty (or labia minora reduction surgery)
Intimate surgery
The hypertrophy of the labia minora is characterized by small vaginal lips emerging out of the slit of the vulva in the upright position. This one can be responsible for aesthetic or functional discomfort (pain during sexual intercourse, inconvenience in getting dressed, discomfort while playing sports).
The nymphoplasty enables to reduce the size of the small vaginal lips.
This procedure can be unilateral or bilateral.
Procedure steps
- He will listen to you in order to understand your discomfort, its impact on your intimate life, and your specific requests relating to the labia minora.
- In the presence of his assistant, he will carry out a clinical examination of the labia majora, the extent of the hypertrophy and a possible asymmetry between your labia minora in order to suggest the most appropriate strategy of treatment corresponding to your anatomy and to your request.
- Dr. Petit will provide information on the scar positioning, treatment process and procedure limits, post-operative recoveries as well as main risks, so as to make an informed decision.
Good candidates for the nymphoplasty operation are those
- With a hypertrophy of one or both vaginal lips.
- With aesthetic and/or functional discomfort, causing sexual and psychological disorders.
General pre-operative instructions relating to aesthetic surgery
- Smoking cessation 1 month before and after the procedure.
- Discontinuation of medicines which increase bleeding 10 days before and after the procedure: aspirin, anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant medicines, vitamin E.
Procedure stages
The operation is achieved under local anesthesia (associated or not with a sedation). The hospitalization is an out-patient basis (hospital discharge that very evening).
It consists in removing the excess tissue at the level of the free rim of the labia minora. The scar is longitudinal and located along the free rim of the labia minora.
The skin closure is performed with resorbable sutures
What to expect after surgery
An oedema (swelling) is classical and of variable duration, gradually subsiding within a fortnight.
The shower is authorized the day after the procedure and careful personal hygiene is recommended after urination.
The wearing of loose clothing is advised until healing is achieved.
The resumption of daily activities is possible the day following the procedure.
The resumption of professional activities is possible a few days following the procedure.
The resumption of sexual intercourse is possible 3 to 4 weeks following the procedure.
The resumption of sports activities can be done within 4 weeks following the operation.
Procedure risks
The complications of a nymphoplasty are weak and will be mentioned by Dr. Petit during the consultation. Pains are well soothed by analgesics.
Main risks are the following
In the first hours following the surgery:
- A haematoma.
In the post-operative month:
- A scarring disunity (opening of the scar).
- Transitory troubles of the labia minora sensitivity.
- An infection (prevented by careful genital hygiene).
Long-term result
The final result of labia minora reduction surgery is obtained between 3 to 6 months after the procedure, when the post-operative oedema has disappeared. The scars in the labia minora are virtually invisible. The result is stable and long-lasting.
The labia minora reduction surgery is a reliable and efficient procedure with significant aesthetic, functional and psychological benefits in patients wishing the operation.
